Nursten Food Security

The Nursten Fulbright Postgraduate Student Award at the University of Florida – College of Agricultural and Life Sciences provides a full tuition fee waiver and living expenses for UK graduates to pursue a master’s degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) at the school.

This award is possible through generous legacy gifts by Harry and Jean Nursten. Harry Nursten was a Fulbrighter and a leading food scientist who chaired the University of Reading’s Food Science Department for 16 years. His experiences as a Fulbright Scholar were transformative both to his career and to food science in the UK. Jean Nursten was a noted sociologist who was also affiliated with the University of Reading. Both were committed to advancing knowledge, promoting civic engagement and developing students to be compassionate leaders, central values of the US-UK Fulbright Commission.

The UK awardee of the Nursten Food Security Award will be partnered with the US awardee of the Fulbright University of Reading Award in food security. Both awards are supported by gifts from the Nursten family. Both awardees will be required to jointly produce content or organise an event that showcases food security research to the wider public, in a truly transatlantic exchange.

A word from a UFL alumna

"There is a true sense of community here at the University of Florida... I have made the most incredible friendships, through classes, pick-up soccer, sports clubs, an Uber driver and local teachers to name a few. Gainesville has so much to offer with beautiful nature trails, parks and of course, lakes with gators (I promise they are not as scary as they may sound!)."
