His teaching, research and knowledge exchange activity specialises in the fields of sustainability education, geography education and practitioner enquiry. He is also an active member of a number of national and international working groups and professional networks relating to these areas. His current research explores the distribution of public open spaces in Scotland’s urban areas and its influence on the health and wellbeing of adolescents
In particular, William has a keen interest in Learning for Sustainability (an umbrella term used in Scottish education to refer to education for sustainable development, global citizenship and outdoor learning) and the barriers and opportunities related to its implementation. William is no stranger to international collaboration. He recently collaborated with colleagues in The Netherlands, Iceland, Spain and Greece on the Erasmus+ Island Schools project, a project that saw him and colleagues working with island schools to co-create learning materials that focused on the shared sustainability issues experienced by young people living on Europe’s islands.
