
Shawn Hutchinson

Shawn Hutchinson is a professor of geography at Kansas State University, where he also serves as director of the Geographic Information Systems Spatial Analysis Laboratory and founding co-director of the Institute for Digital Agriculture and Advanced Analytics (ID3A).
His career has been driven by a passion for leveraging geospatial technologies to deepen our understanding of human-environment interactions and to enhance decision-making in areas such as sustainable ecosystem management, water resources, and food security.
As a scholar at the University of Nottingham, Shawn will focus on exploring data, methodologies, and workflows aimed at improving ecosystem service assessments, particularly carbon sequestration in grassland environments. His goals during this experience include contributing to impactful interdisciplinary research, fostering long-term institutional partnerships that advance the fields of geography and digital agriculture, and engaging with students in the classroom.
Beyond his academic work, Shawn enjoys fly-fishing, sports, and travel. He looks forward to connecting with new colleagues, discovering the UK’s rich and varied physical landscapes, enjoying traditional cuisine and the vibrant pub culture, and attending both Premier League and local football matches.
