Ryan Martin
Fulbright-University of Birmingham Scholar Award (All Disciplines)
Ryan Martin graduated with a PhD in Mathematics from Rutgers University but began studying extremal graph theory as an undergraduate at the University of Delaware, where he graduated with a BSc. After earning his PhD, Ryan was a postdoctoral scholar at Carnegie Mellon University.
Since 2003, Ryan Martin has been on the faculty of Iowa State University and has had several long-term visits, including a Fulbright to Hungary jointly sponsored by the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics and the Rényi Institute for Mathematics. While at the University of Birmingham, Ryan plans to collaborate extensively with the faculty and students in the research group in Combinatorics, Probability and Algorithms, studying the extremal properties of graphs and of partially-ordered sets. With this Fulbright, he will have the opportunity to bridge the gap between researchers and the general public on the role of discrete mathematical models. He will also facilitate comparison between the roles of US “land grant” and UK “red brick” universities.
As editor-in-chief of the journal Order, Ryan Martin is interested in connecting mathematical communities and harnessing the expertise of researchers from around the world and across disciplines. He is looking forward to expanding this work in Birmingham.
