Rachele Riley

Fulbright-Glasgow School of Art Distinguished Scholar Award

Rachele Riley is an artist, graphic designer, and Associate Professor of New Media and Design at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Her research explores representations of conflict; poetics of land/water, language, and body; and the material systems of archives. Her Fulbright project, entitled “World Wide Water: Visualizing the Dynamics of Water, Letterforms, and Space,” will involve research into water ecologies, mythologies, technologies, phenomena, and the expression of letterform design in urban and rural areas, specifically in Glasgow, Scotland and the Highlands. She will be conducting field, studio, and archival research, taking inspiration from the feminist histories and artistic innovations of the area, and working on a visual mapping and multimedia image series on water and environmental typography. Encompassing drawing, interactive imaging, collage, typography, lettering, and animation, she will be extending this research to teaching activities within the School of Design at the Glasgow School of Art, and also sharing her work with the public. While living in the UK, Rachele looks forward to forming bonds with people and places, and experiencing various aspects of life in Scotland, such as food, community tennis, live music, and walking tours.
