Paul Lewis

Fulbright-University of Sheffield Scholar Award (All Disciplines)

Paul G. Lewis is Associate Professor in the School of Politics and Global Studies at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. He grew up in New Jersey and has lived in six U.S. states. Prior to joining ASU in 2005, he served as a Research Fellow and Program Director at the Public Policy Institute of California.

Paul is a scholar of urban policy, with a particular interest in how local governments shape urban development patterns. Although his geographic focus to date has been on U.S. cities, he will turn his analysis to British cities in his Fulbright project at the University of Sheffield.

He will be examining how local authorities in British cities have handled – and how residents of those cities have reacted to – proposals for “low-traffic neighborhoods” and “15-minute cities,” which are efforts to reorient urban planning around goals of improved pedestrian access and sustainability. An ultimate goal of the project is to compare the political response to land-use and transport reform proposals on both sides of the Atlantic. Given his enjoyment of cities and travel, he looks forward to exploring U.K. cities and towns while learning about their policies and politics.
