Naveera Majid

Fulbright/Manchester Metropolitan University Award in Creative Writing

Naveera Majid graduated from the University of Houston with a BA in English, concentrating in Creative Writing with a minor in Sociology. Originally from Houston, Texas, her poetry focuses on language, belonging, and diaspora rooted in lived experience. She has participated in Houston’s local literary and creative communities and worked across legal and higher education settings, including an immigration law firm supporting survivors, a university writing centre, and development work at Rice University. Across these roles, she has become interested in how institutions shape access to support and community resources. While at Manchester Metropolitan University, Naveera will pursue an MA in Creative Writing. Her project focuses on poetry as a tool for healing and empowerment for survivors of gender-based violence. She looks forward to working with multilingual writers, engaging with the Manchester Poetry Library’s Urdu collection, and learning from her mentor, Anjum Malik. This Fulbright will allow her to bring what she learns back to Houston to develop community-based writing programs in partnership with local nonprofit organisations. Outside of her work, Naveera enjoys British music, especially Muse, and is happiest around cats and a good cup of chai. She is excited to experience Manchester’s Curry Mile!
