Michael Bencomo

Fulbright/Ulster University Award

Michael Bencomo graduated with a BS in Political Science from Arizona State University. Michael’s passion for studying how to counter political extremism stems from the experiences he cultivated while writing his undergraduate thesis about how to prevent extremism caused by online radicalization. Since 2023 he has worked in government, including roles at the Arizona Legislature and U.S. Department of State. In these positions, Michael has provided policy research and analysis on a variety of local and international issues. While at Ulster University, Michael will undertake a MSc in Peace and Conflict Studies to develop expertise on how to prevent youth radicalization perpetuated by online extremist propaganda in the context of Northern Ireland. From this research, he hopes to develop strategies for policymakers and practitioners to help counter political extremism in the United Kingdom and abroad. Outside of his studies Michael is an avid musician, playing the trumpet for over 10 years. While studying in Northern Ireland he looks forward to immersing himself in the local music scene to learn more about the brass bands and folk music of Belfast.
