Mary McCurry

Fulbright-Edinburgh Napier University Scholar Award (Nursing)

Dr. Mary K. McCurry is a professor in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts- Dartmouth. She currently serves as the nursing PhD program director and has received numerous awards for her mentoring expertise. Dr. McCurry has a PhD in nursing from Boston College and is an ANCC certified Adult and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. She has conducted extensive research on topics related to stigma in healthcare, substance use disorders, nursing education, family caregivers, and nursing philosophy and theory. As a Fulbright Scholar at Edinburgh Napier University, Dr. McCurry will study simulation-based interventions with nursing students in Scotland to reduce substance use related stigma and enhance empathy when caring for people who use drugs. The NO STIGMA (Novel Organizational Simulation Training to Improve Graduates' Mastery & Attitudes) toolkit, developed by Dr. McCurry and her research team, will be culturally adapted using stakeholder codesign and qualitative evaluation to generate rich insights about cultural barriers and facilitators to stigma reduction training in Scotland.
