Madison McKnight
Fulbright/University of Glasgow Award
Madison recently graduated with a B.A. in International Studies and History from the College of Charleston. Her passion for Scottish history deepened during her undergraduate studies, where she pursued independent research and spent an exchange year at the University of Stirling, culminating in her Bachelor’s Essay titled The Scottish Perspective: Popular Protest during the Anglo-Scottish Union, 1603–1707. While in Stirling, Scotland transformed from a subject of academic interest into a lived experience and second home, deepening Madison’s passion for the country and its culture.
As a Fulbright grantee, Madison will pursue a master’s in Scottish History at the University of Glasgow. Her research will explore the aftermath of the 1707 Anglo-Scottish Union and its influence on Scotland’s colonial ventures in the Caribbean and North America, particularly in her home region of the Carolinas. She aims to examine how political and economic developments fueled transatlantic trade and entrenched systems of slavery and expropriation. During her time in Scotland, Madison looks forward to working with expert faculty, volunteering in local museums, and exploring Scotland’s landscapes. She hopes her time in Glasgow will deepen her understanding of the legacy of colonialism and reparative justice, informing her future work in academia.
