University of Virginia - Global Challenges Teaching Award: Health Inequality

Kathryn Quissell (Katy) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia. She is a political scientist with expertise in global health policy and governance. She has a PhD in Public Administration from American University, an MPH in Sociomedical Sciences from Columbia University, an MSc in Health Policy, Planning, and Financing from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the London School of Economics.

Her research investigates the political dynamics of how governments, organizations, and advocates shape which issues receive attention, which policies are adopted, how policies are designed, how policies are implemented, and the feedback effects of policies on target populations. Currently, her main projects examine the impact of advocacy on disability and gender-related stigma to strengthen community inclusion and health service delivery. She is the Director of the Global Public Health undergraduate program and teaches graduate and undergraduate level comparative health systems and global health policy and governance courses.

During the Fulbright Global Challenges Teaching Award, Dr. Quissell will have the opportunity to learn more about virtual exchange and online international instruction while designing innovative new health equity teaching modules and projects with her partner.

Kathryn is joined by her institutional team: Tina Mangier and Sarah Cochran.
