Josie Barth

Josie Torres Barth is a scholar of broadcast media history and Assistant Professor of Film and Media Studies in the Department of English at Bucknell University. Her research focuses on the intersections of gender, domestic space, and new media technologies in US radio and television horror from the 1940s through the 1960s, demonstrating how anxieties about technological, industrial, and cultural change became thematic fodder for home-based horror. As a Scholar at the University of Sheffield, Josie will work with the research communities of the Sheffield Centre for Research in Film and Television and the Centre for History of the Gothic to complete a draft of her monograph, Uncanny on Air: Horror Anthologies from Radio to TV in the Postwar Home. Her work on horror radio and television has appeared in Adaptation, where it won the 2025 Early-Career Researcher Prize; Camera Obscura: Feminism, Culture, and Media Studies; and the edited collection Prestige Television: Cultural and Artistic Value in Twenty-First Century America.
