Jonathan Runstadler

Jonathan Runstadler has studied influenza disease ecology from coast to coast in North America. As a Veterinary Scientist with a DVM and PhD degrees from the University of California, Davis and a BS in Biology from Stanford University, he began to build his research group initially at the University of Alaska Fairbanks after the emergence of avian influenza virus in Southeast Asia. 

In 2011, Jon joined the faculty at MIT and later moved to Tufts University where he was appointed Chair of the Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health in 2020 and where he has continued to work to understand the emergence and spillover of influenza and other viruses between susceptible hosts. 

While at the University of Nottingham, he will work with colleagues at the Wolfson Centre for Global Virus Research to better understand the transmission and movement of influenza virus in nature, particularly intercontinentally across the Atlantic Ocean, and viral transmission into new hosts. In parallel, he will work to develop new products for communicating this science to the public and to policymakers both domestically and internationally to advocate for One Health approaches to preventing infectious disease outbreak and for engaging veterinary students and professionals in science communication.
