Fulbright All-Disciplines Scholar Award - Getty Research Institute

Jennifer Terry is an Associate Professor of English at Durham University, UK, specialising in Black and African diaspora cultures. With a background in literary studies, her work has increasingly focused on visual art in recent years. While a Fulbright Scholar, Jennifer will pursue research that takes up the politics of time - asking how these politics are registered across different art forms - in order to better identify the visions of the future, the modes of future-thinking, shaped by marginalised people. This book project, 'Imagined Futures in African American Narrative,' investigates how contemporary Black art and fiction has laid claim to futures, despite social structures and temporal discourses that reinforce the historic, colonial association of modernity, progress and futurity with European advancement. Understanding of how hierarchies of time have operated in the past across Atlantic contexts can aid us in working toward shared, more equitable futures. Through collaboration with the African American Art History Initiative at her host The Getty, Jennifer also hopes to extend the work of the interdisciplinary research network, African Atlantic Lives and Visual Culture, and is excited about sharing arts and sports opportunities with Angelenos and other new friends in LA.
