Jasmine Oware

The Fulbright Stephen Lawrence Award in Policing

Jasmine is a serving Detective Constable in England and Wales with over 10 years of experience in policing and investigations. Her academic interest in police legitimacy and use of force developed during her doctoral research at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her work explores officer attitudes, trends and patterns of force deployment, and how organisational justice and self-legitimacy shape policing practice.

As a Fulbright Visiting Scholar hosted by Howard University School of Law, North Carolina Central University School of Law, and the University of the District of Columbia School of Law, Jasmine will examine the experiences of Black police officers—their motivations for joining the force, the organisational culture they encounter, and the wider cultural and systemic factors influencing recruitment and retention.

The Fulbright Award provides Jasmine with a unique opportunity to connect academic research with lived experience, while engaging with scholars, and communities in both the UK and US. It also supports the development of comparative perspectives on policing.

Outside of her academic work, Jasmine is excited to explore Washington, D.C.’s rich history and culture. She looks forward to visiting the Smithsonian museums, walking the National Mall, and discovering the city’s diverse neighbourhoods and food scene.
