University of Michigan–Dearborn

Dr. Jacob Napieralski is a professor of geology at the University of Michigan–Dearborn and serves as director of the Environmental Interpretive Center. A dedicated researcher and educator, he has expertise spanning urban hydrogeomorphology, and geospatial technology. His impactful research examines how historic environmental changes and modern urbanization, such as buried "ghost streams," affect flooding risks in historically redlined communities. Driven by community-based solutions, Dr. Napieralski frequently collaborates with local governments and students to map urban tree canopies and evaluate flood hazards. A recognized leader in international academic collaboration, he previously partnered with the local Cypriot Geological Survey Department on critical soil and water conservation projects. He is a recipient of the UM–Dearborn Distinguished Teaching Award and actively fosters student-faculty research mentorships that prepare the next generation of environmental scientists for impactful regional and global careers.
