Gabriel Paynter
Fulbright/University of York Award
Gabriel graduated with a BS in Physics and Astrophysics with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Cincinnati. Gabriel developed his interests in plasma physics and fusion energy while interning at General Atomics in San Diego, where he worked on metrology for inertial confinement fusion targets.
Gabriel has since worked on experimental condensed matter physics at the University of Cincinnati. He worked on materials with interesting electrical properties when subjected to large magnetic fields. Gabriel’s primary academic interest is in plasmas and fusion energy, specifically magnetic confinement fusion devices. Gabriel will pursue the MSc in Fusion Energy at the University of York where he will develop his knowledge of plasmas and fusion energy and complete a research project at a leading institution in the field. The Fulbright will allow Gabriel to develop his research interests and skills while developing connections with the international fusion community.
Outside of academics, Gabriel has volunteered with different groups focusing on access to historical and scientific records and community scientific outreach, and he looks forward to further work on scientific outreach in York. Gabriel also plays the alto saxophone and looks forward to performing in a group and exploring music in the UK.
