Emilie Allen

Fulbright/Ulster University Award

Emilie Allen is from Nappanee, Indiana. She has recently received her bachelor's degree in English with a concentration in literature from Ball State University. During her time at Ball State, Emilie was the president of Run Club, the co-editor for the honours undergraduate journal Odyssey, and a Newman Civic Fellow for Campus Compact. She has also worked with the Center for Economic and Civic Learning to increase community engagement and civic knowledge within the Muncie Community Schools district. From a young age, Emilie has enjoyed reading, and she intends to continue pursuing her passion to study contemporary Irish literature during her grant period in Northern Ireland while collecting sign language narratives. As a deaf student, Emilie is excited to learn Irish Sign Language and British Sign Language through immersion. She also enjoys running marathons and is looking forward to joining the running community. Through this Fulbright, Emilie aims to explore how different expressive and visual forms of language develop under constraint and conflict as a way to articulate trauma, and to establish strong connections between sign language and literature.
