Charlotte Linton

Fulbright All-Disciplines Scholar Award - University of California Santa Cruz

Charlotte Linton is a designer, social anthropologist, and Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at All Souls College, University of Oxford. She is a graduate of the University of Oxford (MSc; DPhil), the Royal College of Art (MA) and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (BA). Her work explores textile techniques, aesthetics, and histories focusing on the social, environmental, and economic relationships formed during the production process. At the University of California Santa Cruz, Charlotte will be based in the History of Consciousness department. Here she will develop the theoretical output of her global study on nature-friendly farming methods in textile production and carry out apprenticeship-based ethnographic fieldwork in the wider California area. Charlotte will be examining the impact that textile farmers have on the intertwined aspects of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and social inequality. The research carried out during Charlotte’s Fulbright Award will contribute towards a monograph and collaborative symposium with academics and practitioners. A keen outdoor swimmer, Charlotte is looking forward to engaging with Santa Cruz beach culture and maybe even learning to surf!
