Candace Livingston

Candace Livingston (PhD, University of Southern California) is Associate Professor of Art History in the Department of Art + Design at Anderson University (South Carolina). As an archaeologist, she has excavated and conducted field surveys in Italy, Turkey, Romania, and most recently in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. Candace’s research interest is the sensory experience of Roman animal sacrifices. By analysing what was seen, heard, smelled, felt, and tasted during religious rituals, she hopes to better understand how the Romans framed their relationship to their gods, and make the study of the ancient world compelling and accessible to students and general audiences by using relatable sensory experiences as an entry point. She became interested in this topic while on a Fulbright to Turkey as a graduate student and is excited to come full circle by completing her book on the subject while hosted by the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham. She looks forward to exploring Northern England, especially Roman fort sites along Hadrian’s Wall, and plans to join a walking club to learn about the landscape through local eyes.
