Annabelle Harris
Fulbright/University of St. Andrews Award in Arts & Humanities
Annabelle graduated from Tulane University magna cum laude in Spring of 2024 with a BA in Classical Studies and Latin and a BS in Mathematics. As an undergrad, she studied various languages: Latin, Greek, Italian, Kaqchikel, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Etruscan, and Mayan Hieroglyphics. Tulane granted her the Judah Touro Medal for outstanding excellence in ancient languages. She also spent her summers in college excavating at archaeological sites in Pompeii and Mongolia. After graduating, she joined the professional world of archaeology as a field technician and lithic analyst on a Native American site in Virginia.
Annabelle will pursue a Master of Letters in Classical Studies at St. Andrews, where she will research Greek perceptions of bilingual people before and after the rise of Rome. She intends to integrate literature, archaeology, and linguistics to understand the difference between perception and reality for bilingual Greeks. In Scotland, she hopes to draw comparisons between modern language death and ancient linguistic discrimination through ethnographic research.
Annabelle will also engage with Scotland through her passions for archaeology, glassblowing, language, and dance. She intends to volunteer to conserve and restore archaeological sites along the Scottish coast, travel to Edinburgh to learn from glass masters following a centuries-old tradition, and take Scottish Gaelic language and Country Dance classes.
