The Sutton Trust US Programme is looking for its 12th cohort

The Sutton Trust US Programme supports students from state schools across the UK to explore undergraduate study in the USA and access leading universities. We work with 150 students every year, and are currently searching for our twelfth cohort.

The programme includes two UK-based residentials before all students spend a week in the United States staying on campus at a leading university and visiting a variety of other American universities. An optional second year of the programme supports students to apply to US universities alongside their UCAS options.

The programme is delivered by the US-UK Fulbright Commission and funded by the Sutton Trust, the UK’s leading social mobility charity, and delivered in partnership with the US-UK Fulbright Commission. It is driven by the mission that study in the USA should not be for a select few but available to all.

Using the Sutton Trust’s expertise in improving the prospects of young people, combined with Fulbright’s expertise on advising people on studying in the United States, the programme has reached students from all types of backgrounds across the UK. 80% of students that have been on the programme are the first in their generation to attend university, while in the current cohort of students, 63% are from a family with a household income below £25,000.

This year we celebrate our tenth year of the Sutton Trust US Programme. In that time, over 1,500 students have taken part and 500 students have made their way to the US to complete their undergraduate studies. Collectively, our students have secured places at universities in the US and the UK, and they have unlocked over $155M in financial aid. Hundreds have graduated from university and are now embarking on exciting careers.

The deadline to apply for the 12th cohort of the Sutton Trust US Programme is on Sunday, 15th January 2023.

You can help us by sharing the programme among your networks and with any students, parents and state school teachers that you may know.

We also have an opportunity to help with selecting the most deserving students by helping to read some of the 1000 applications we receive every year. If you’re alumni and are interested in finding out more, get in touch with Roisin Murphy at suttontrust@fulbright.org.uk.
