Robert Burns, Black Lives and The Politics of Memory

Fulbright alumnus Dr Arun Sood discusses the legacy of Robert Burns in nineteenth-century America, exploring links between the Scottish poet's works and African-American protest songs during the Civil War.

Addressing Burns in relation to contested histories, conflicted memories, and problematic colonial legacies, Dr Sood's discussion with US-UK Fulbright grantees and alumni, moderated by Maria Balinska (Executive Director, US-UK Fulbright Commission), explored the importance of reconsidering transatlantic history to inform our understanding of the current discourse and events around the Black Lives Matter movement.

This interactive lecture was organised as part of the online Fulbright Farewell event for 2019-2020 Fulbright US Scholars.
