HESA is reporting a record 4,800 US students studied at UK universities for their first degrees in 2014-15, marking an approximate five per cent increase over the previous year. From 2013-14 to 2014-15, the total number of Americans enrolled at UK universities (16,865) increased at a faster rate (2.3%) than that of Chinese (1.9%) and Indian (-7.2%) students.
Originally known as the US Summer Institutes for UK Students, these five-week programmes are designed to give British undergraduate students with little foreign travel experience the opportunity to live and study at a top-class US higher education institution alongside students from other European countries.
The daughter of a hairstylist and a teenage carer are among 43 British state school students from low and middle income homes who have won places to study at top US universities through the Sutton Trust US Programme, run in conjunction with the US-UK Fulbright Commission, it was announced today.
