- Your Fulbright Year33
Q: When should I apply for a Fulbright award?
A:You should apply in the application cycle in the year prior to when you will start your programme in the US. For example, for courses beginning in September 2017, you should start planning in summer 2016 and be ready to apply by the application deadline of 6 November 2016.
Fulbright awards are only given for teh academic year following the application cycle, and Fulbright awards cannot be deferred. If you are offered an award you must begin your porgramme of study the following academic year, and if you do not, you will not be given the award and you will have to reapply for an award should you chose to study in the US in a subsequent year.
Start planning well in advance. One to two years ahead is not too early. Applications for Fulbright Awards run on a similar timeline to applications for postgraduate study at US universities. You will likely be preparing both your Fulbright application and your US university application at the same time, or your Fulbright application will be submitted before you prepare your university application.
Q: I am currently applying for an Master's degree to begin studying in the Autumn/Fall 2016 term. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline for the Fulbright Postgraduate Awards 2014-15, but was wondering if I could apply now for funding to cover my second year of study?
A: No. The US-UK Fulbright Awards are only offered for the academic year following the application and selection process, and are only available to support UK citizens in their first year of postgraduate study in the United States and cannot be used to support the second or third year of study. If you wish to apply for a Fulbright Award for the 2017-18 academic year then you will need to formally defer your studies by one year and apply to Fulbrihgt by 6 November 2016.
Q: The postgraduate course I wish to pursue starts in January 2018, not September 2017, should I still apply 6 November 2016?
A: Yes. For all of our Postgraduate Award categories except the British Friends of Harvard Business School MBA Awards*, you will need to apply by 6 November 2016 for study, research or lecturing in the 2017-18 academic year.
*The British Friends of Harvard Business School Award has separate applicaiton instructions and applications close 10 April 2017.
Q: I will not get my degree until after the Fulbright application deadline. Can I still apply?
A: Yes, you can apply, but if you are offered an award it will be on condition that you get at least a 2.1 or equivalent. In your application you must submit an official expected degree class.
Q: I will not hear decisions on my US university applications until late March. Does that mean I cannot apply for a Fulbright scholarship?
A: No, it does not, you can still apply. Most candidates do not have a firm offer of a place even when we conduct the interviews. The Fulbright Award process is separate to the university admissions process, and occurs around the same time, so you will be preparing your Fulbrihgt application before or at the same time as your university applications. If you are interviewed and are successful, you will be offered an Award on the condition that you get a place at an accredited university in the US.
Q: What is the minimum lentgh of a Fulbright Award?
A: For postgraduate awards, the minimum length is one academic semester and no shorter than 4 months. For scholar awards, the minimum length is 3 months.
