About the University
The University of Sussex was the first of the new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960s. Sussex has become a leading teaching and research institution.
Sussex is a research intensive university, the University is considered to be among the leading 20 research universities in the UK. Sussex’s Science Policy Research unit (SPRU) was ranked by the journal ‘Research Policy’ second only to Harvard University in terms of its research impact in innovation studies.
Sussex emphasises interdisciplinary teaching and research and has particular strengths in the Humanities (American Studies, English Literature, History), Social Sciences & Cultural Studies (Business and Management Studies, Development Studies, Education, International Relations, Law, Media Studies), Life Sciences (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Psychology), Science & Technology (Computing Sciences, Engineering & Information Technology, Science & Technology Policy). A large number of our undergraduates spend a year of their degree overseas.
Some of our more recent research can be seen in this short video.
Sussex has one of the most beautiful campus locations in Britain. Situated in rolling parkland on the edge of Brighton, the campus combines award-winning architecture with green open spaces.
We offer a full orientation programme, as well as trips and social events.
The International & Study Abroad Office and the Students' Union Advice Centre can assist students on a range of matters. There is a health centre and dentist, childcare facilities and disability support. Students are guaranteed University-managed accommodation for their first year of study.
The Students' Union has over 100 societies, a radio station and student publications. There are two multi-purpose sports centres with well-equipped fitness rooms, squash courts, football and rugby pitches, tennis courts, dance studio, and a floodlit Astroturf pitch.
Catering facilities include cafes, take-aways, coffee shop, self-service restaurants and bars, as well as grocery stores, newsagent, bookshop, post office, pharmacy and two banks
Nine minutes by train from campus is the wonderful city of Brighton - Quirky, colourful, unique – and never boring – Brighton is one of the UK's most vibrant and young cities. Each May the city hosts the Brighton Festival and the Brighton Fringe festival, the second largest arts festival in the UK and the second largest fringe festival in the world.
And if all that’s not enough to keep you entertained then central London is just 55 minutes and Gatwick International airport only 25 minutes by train!
A vibrant, welcoming student experience awaits you…
